About The Organisation

The John Laing Charitable Trust (JLCT) is both dedicated to supporting the welfare of current and former employees of John Laing and a significant independent grant-making charity which supports and collaborates with others in the community to improve the lives of those in need.

Sir John Laing CBE was one of Britain’s most successful business leaders and a prolific philanthropist. He inherited his father’s building business in the early 1900s, and under his leadership, the firm expanded into a national enterprise. Sir John was a pioneer and innovator, committed to helping people, regardless of their background or position in society, in ways that encouraged them to help themselves and progress. This ethos continues today in the work of JLCT. We award grants to charities focused on tackling the root causes of socioeconomic inequalities, with a strong emphasis on long-term solutions to societal challenges. Through our grant-making activities, we aim to strengthen community-based services, empower young people, improve access to education and help break the cycle of homelessness.

Building on Sir John’s legacy, JLCT has grown into a grant-making body that positively impacts individuals and communities worldwide.

Position Description

The John Laing Charitable Trust (JLCT) is a grant-making charity. We are seeking an additional Trustee to join in our mission to improve the lives of those in need.

We are looking for a new Trustee with experience in financial, investment or commercial leadership to join our Board. This person will support the Trust’s long-term stewardship, financial oversight and strategic development as we continue to grow our impact across our areas of focus.

As a proactive and engaged funder, we are continually considering how we can use our resources effectively and responsibly to create lasting social impact. You will play an important role in Board discussions relating to financial stewardship, governance, investment and strategic decision-making, bringing sound judgement, insight and constructive challenge to support the Trust’s work.

We are also continuing to develop our approach to social investment and mission-aligned use of capital. Experience or interest in this area would be particularly valuable.

Selection Criteria

You will bring a real passion for our work and a strong alignment with the values and principles that underpin our work, in particular the values of compassion and respect, by which Sir John Laing lived his life and which shaped his support for others.

We are looking for someone with significant senior leadership experience, including responsibility for financial management, investment oversight, organisational strategy or budgets. We welcome applicants from across the voluntary, public or private sector.

You may have experience in finance, accounting, investment management, social investment or broader commercial leadership. Alongside strong financial acumen, you will bring an interest in how charitable funding and investment can contribute to long-term social impact.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can bring knowledge of, lived experience of, or professional experience connected to at least one of our strategic focus areas, including homelessness and support for disadvantaged young people. Experience within the charity or social purpose sector would be valuable, but previous trustee experience is not essential.

With a commitment to equity, inclusion and diversity of perspective, we welcome applications from first-time trustees and candidates from a broad range of backgrounds and experiences. A full and comprehensive induction will be provided to support you to contribute fully as a member of the Board.
