About British Horse Society

British Horse Society is the UK’s largest equestrian charity and membership body, working to create a better future for horses and the people who care for them. Founded in 1947, the Society champions horse welfare, rider safety, access to off-road routes and education across the equestrian sector.

Through its training programmes, qualifications, advocacy and community outreach, it supports everyone from first-time riders to experienced professionals, while helping to ensure that horses are respected, protected and enjoyed by knowledgeable, caring people.

Position Description

Time commitment: 1 day per month

About the role

This Finance Trustee role offers an opportunity to bring senior financial expertise to the Board of British Horse Society, helping to ensure the charity remains financially strong, well-governed and sustainable for the future.

As a Trustee, you will provide strategic oversight and constructive challenge on budgets, reserves, investments, financial controls and risk, while supporting sound decision-making and compliance with legal and regulatory responsibilities. Working collaboratively with fellow Trustees and the executive team, you will contribute to the Society’s long-term resilience and its ability to deliver impact for horses and the people who care for them.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a senior finance professional who is a qualified Chartered Accountant, with broad experience in financial leadership, audit, investment, banking or accountancy.

You will be able to interpret complex financial information and explain it clearly to non-financial colleagues, bringing strong strategic judgement and a clear understanding of budgeting, reserves, internal controls and risk management.

You will also bring independence of thought, integrity and the confidence to provide supportive challenge, alongside a collaborative approach and a commitment to British Horse Society’s mission and values.
