About The Organisation

The Woodfield Project (TWP) is a charity devoted to running and using The Woodfield Pavilion, a refurbished community space that opened in June 2019 serving the communities of Tooting Common and surrounding areas.

Our Vision: to develop the Pavilion as a ‘go-to’ community hub for art, education, recreation, leisure and sports activities that focus on health and wellbeing, and conserves and builds an appreciation of the natural environment among its users.

Our Aims:

  • To provide a safe inclusive space for education, recreation and leisure in arts, culture, the environment, health and wellbeing;
  • To promote the appreciation of the natural environment; and conserve and enhance the natural environment of the Tooting Commons and its surroundings;
  • To increase TWP community reach and membership;
  • To establish more management teams that optimise the use of volunteers; actively engage local people and groups with TWP’s aims,
  • To actively extend the benefits of TWP to vulnerable and socially excluded people in our community.
    Our activities

The main users of Woodfield are local residents, schools, and users of the Tooting Commons. Within 1 kilometre of the Pavilion there are more than 7,000 households, perhaps 21,000 people; and some 12 primary and secondary schools – most with limited access to green space and many with limited space for sports and recreation.

TWP brings back into public use a green space that has been inaccessible to the general public for much of the last thirty years, and provide a hub for the community.
By providing this hub, the community, local schools, harder to reach groups and disadvantaged families have a secure space and toilet facilities. This enables these groups to use the outdoor site and Tooting Common more often and for longer.
We also host a range of events from exhibitions to workshops, talks to walks etc., focused on biodiversity, art, education, community, wellbeing and more. We are also available for private hire and can

Position Description

What will you be doing?

As Treasurer you’ll be a vital part of a charity devoted to community, well being, and the environment. We have a new centre manager with great ideas for expanding our offering and we’re looking for a Treasurer with the financial skills to give him the support he needs. We have no regular funding so your input in building a sustainable funding base will be central to our success.

We’re a tiny charity running a vibrant and busy community centre so the role is very hands-on and will involve connection with every part of our enterprise. You’ll need to be comfortable with a varied role which involves everything from overseeing the preparation and presentation of budgets and financial statements, designing and maintaining robust financial policies and procedures, and advising on fundraising strategies, to maintaining our bank accounts and raising the salary payments of our two employees.

We’ve been through a lot of change recently, so we’re looking to build a stable trustee board. For this reason we’re seeking individuals who can commit to the role for the next three years, who are close to Tooting Common, and who are able to devote four hours a week to the charity. In return, you’ll be part of a small, friendly and informal board of local people who work closely with our centre manager to maximise the difference our charity can make to our communities. You’ll also build a deep connection with a unique building in a stunning natural environment and with the many and diverse groups whom it serves.

What difference will you make?
As Treasurer, you’ll have a vital role as the financial steward of our organisation. You’ll ensure that we have the monetary resources we need to fulfil our charitable mission, that we properly manage and account for the funds which we receive, and that we plan effectively for our long term goals. You’ll be able to employ your finacial knowledge and experience to help your fellow board members meet their financial aims and obligations, while supporting the the day-to-day running of the charity with your ability to manage finances, maintain compliance, and deliver effective services.

Selection Criteria

What are we looking for?
It’s important to us that you’re local to our centre, The Woodfield Pavilion on Tooting Common. We’re a charity that is all about local communities and engagement with our local environment, so we’d like you to be close enough to pop in on a regular basis. You must also be in a position to devote four hours a week to the charity and to sustain the role over the next three years.

As Treasurer you’ll need a background in accounting, finance, bookkeeping or similar, and you’ll have knowledge and experience of budgeting/forecasting and financial reporting. You’ll combine an attention to detail with strategic thinking and and an ability to balance risks and opportunities. And given that the rest of the board is not fiancial specialists, you’ll be able to explain and interprest financial information to them.

How to Apply

Applicants should share a short expression of interest outlining background and relevant experience together with a CV.

If you want to discuss the role first, please let us know – there are more details on our website at https://www.thewoodfield.org/vacancies.

Once you’ve submitted your application, we will acknowledge it and circulate it to the board for consideration. We will generally get back to you within a week to let you know if we’re interested in taking things further, following which we will arrange a short interview with two of the trustees at the Woodfield Pavilion.
