About The Organisation

Millicent Fawcett secured women’s right to vote and founded the Fawcett Society. One hundred and fifty years on, we are still fighting for equality, for justice and for the right of every woman and girl to thrive.

The Fawcett Society is the UK’s leading charity campaigning for women’s rights and gender equality. With a reach that stretches from grassroots activism to Westminster policy chambers, Fawcett remains one of the most recognised and respected voices. We are a small but mighty team with a national profile, full of determination and drive to be agile and responsive.

Position Description

This is a significant moment in Fawcett’s history. The organisation has an ambitious strategy, has undertaken a comprehensive rebrand, and welcomed a new Chief Executive, Penny East. The board itself has recently been renewed, with a cohort of talented Trustees committed to the work ahead and we are moving into the next financial period in a strong position with growth ambitions. Harriet Harman, who has chaired the organisation with great distinction, has reached the end of her term. The incoming Chair will step into a role that carries genuine responsibility and opportunity.

The Chair will work in close partnership with the Chief Executive and Trustees, providing the thought partnership, challenge and support that Fawcett’s ambition demands. You will lead a board that is passionate and engaged and help bring clarity, structure and decisiveness to governance and strategy. You will also be a visible ambassador for the organisation, engaging with stakeholders whose support is vital to Fawcett’s impact and sustainability.

The role requires someone willing to engage substantively, handle challenges and complexity and hold both the organisation’s long-term ambitions and its day-to-day realities in mind at once.

Selection Criteria

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate:

  • Strong strategic leadership and governance experience, ideally at Board level.
  • Experience as a Chair or senior Non-Executive Director (desirable).
  • A solid understanding of governance, risk management and organisational performance.
  • The ability to think strategically, guiding long-term direction and navigating complexity.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and build consensus.
  • A clear commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, fostering an open Board culture.
  • The credibility and confidence to act as an ambassador with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • An understanding of or interest in the health, rare disease or charity sector.
  • A strong alignment with the organisation’s mission and purpose, with a passion for driving meaningful impact.
