Position Description

As a Governor, you will be expected to:

  • Provide strategic oversight, shaping the educational character, sustainability and long-term success of the College.
  • Work collaboratively with the Governing Body and Board Members to ensure the College’s mission meets community needs.
  • Ensure the effective and responsible use of public funds.
  • Uphold legal and regulatory compliance, including adherence to the Instrument and Articles of Government and wider FE framework.
  • Hold executive leaders to account for the quality of education, learner outcomes and staff performance.
  • Safeguard the College’s financial health and long-term sustainability.
  • Apply independent judgement, professional expertise and specialist knowledge to Board and committee decision-making.
  • Act with integrity, diligence and accountability in all governance responsibilities.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the College, strengthening relationships with partners and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to driving educational excellence and protecting the interests of learners and communities through effective governance.

Selection Criteria

The successful candidates will need to demonstrate:

  • Professional credibility, sound judgement and a strong commitment to further education.
  • The ability to act as strategic thinkers, analysing complex information and contributing to effective decision making.
  • Confidence in providing constructive challenge and informed insight at Board and committee level.
  • A commitment to high standards, learner-centred practice and student wellbeing.
  • Strong integrity, collaboration and alignment with the College’s mission and impact.

For the Academic Standards and Quality Assurance Committee:

  • Senior leadership experience in education, ideally within further education.
  • Deep understanding of teaching, learning and strategic curriculum development.
  • Experience in safeguarding, local authority education services or 14–16 provision (desirable).
  • The ability to contribute expert insight into educational quality and standards.
  • Willingness to serve as a full Board member alongside committee responsibilities.

For the Audit Committee:

  • Professional expertise in audit, risk, compliance or cyber security, or senior finance qualifications.
  • Strong understanding of financial oversight, risk management and governance processes.
  • The ability to provide assurance and scrutiny to support transparency and accountability.
  • Initial focus on Audit Committee membership, with potential to join the full Board in future.
