About The Organisation

Our objectives

The chapel offers a distinctive artistic programme, supporting both emerging and established artists, and providing learning opportunities for the community. It is a space for quiet reflection, discovery, and celebration, connecting diverse communities, visitors, and partners. Open to all faiths, beliefs, backgrounds, and cultures, the Fitzrovia Chapel continues to be recognised as a landmark of cultural and historic significance.

As the former chapel of the Middlesex Hospital, it is a place of meaning, memory and sanctuary for many. Today the chapel is an enriching cultural space for creative health and wellbeing.

Our activities

The Fitzrovia Chapel is an enchanting jewel of Byzantine inspired architecture located in the heart of the Fitzrovia community.

We are responsible for promoting the chapel’s unique place in local history, heritage, and culture, as well as the conservation, restoration, maintenance, and preservation of the building and its contents. As a registered charity operating without public subsidy, much of our work is funded through commercial hire, including weddings, marriage blessings and proposals, civil partnerships, baby naming ceremonies, workshops, exhibitions, concerts, fashion shows, book launches and shoots.

Position Description

We are seeking trustees with a wide range of backgrounds and skills to help steer the direction of the Fitzrovia Chapel, a Grade II* listed building and former hospital chapel cherished for its remarkable architecture, mosaics, history and atmosphere.

What will you be doing?

As a member of the board, you’ll have an important role in contributing towards the future direction of the Fitzrovia Chapel Foundation and our work in maintaining the Grade II* listed building and our charitable activities.

We’re planning our second and third years of our curator in residence programme as well as other parts of our cultural, historical and wellbeing programme.

We have a plan of maintenance projects which keep the building in a superb state since its renovation ten years ago.

We are also developing strong local, national and international links with partners in the heritage, architecture and wellbeing sectors.

What’s Involved

Attending approximately four board meetings per year (usually in London, with hybrid
options).
Reading board papers and contributing thoughtfully to board discussions.
Supporting the charity’s long-term vision and good governance.
Acting as an ambassador for the Chapel.
You will be part of a friendly team of fellow trustees, staff and volunteers, with regular opportunities to socialise. Trustees will be provided with an induction pack and training and development is encouraged.

Our Commitment to Inclusion
We welcome and encourage applications from individuals who are under-represented on charity boards, including disabled people, younger applicants and people from minoritised ethnic backgrounds.

What difference will you make?
As a trustee with skills, particularly in either legal, governance, or risk management; heritage, conservation, or historic buildings; marketing, communications, or audience development; or community engagement, culture, or the arts, you will help shape our ambitious programme of activities and networks.

Selection Criteria

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. In particular, we would be interested to hear from individuals with skills or experience in:

  • Legal, governance, or risk management
  • Heritage, conservation, or historic buildings
  • Marketing, communications, or audience development
  • Community engagement, culture, or the arts
  • You do not need prior trustee experience.
