About The Organisation

The Beckmead Trust believes that every young person has the right to the best possible education and a chance to succeed.

We are stronger through a sense of community and social justice, and our family of schools all maintain this as the foundation of their provision.

Our schools deliver practice models that not only tailor education to students, but also involve parents, carers and agencies, forming a network of support for all of our young people.

Working exclusively with children with special educational needs, our team of highly-skilled and caring staff members deliver excellent pedagogy and a vibrant curriculum that helps young people to thrive, empowering them to aspire towards opportunities in their future, leading to successful and fulfilled lives.

The Beckmead Family of Schools was judged to be Outstanding by Ofsted.

Position Description

The Beckmead Trust is undergoing an exciting period of change, and from September we are seeking a number of committed and enthusiastic individuals to join our Local Governing Bodies to play a vital role in supporting our schools.

As a Local Governor, you will contribute to the day-to-day oversight of a school within the Trust, working closely with the Headteacher to provide support and professional expertise. Throughout the academic year, you will help ensure that the school maintains a culture of high expectations, delivering excellence in education to enable every student to succeed.

You will be part of a dedicated team focused on maintaining strong governance, with particular emphasis on representing the voice of parents and the wider community.

Our Local Governing Bodies follow a consistent structure across the Trust and are made up of up to eight members, ensuring effective and focused decision-making.

We are recruiting governors for boards in the following regions:

  • Sussex
  • Essex
  • London
  • Croydon

You do not need to live in one of these areas to be considered for a board position. Many of our governors live across the country with board meetings often taking place online.

Timeline

We will be recruiting on a rolling basis, so we recommend you get your application in as soon as you can. The posts will start from September 2026.

Selection Criteria

You don’t need prior experience in education to be a fantastic governor. We value diverse perspectives and are looking for individuals who can:

Collaborate: Work effectively as part of a dedicated team.

Time Commitment: Dedicate approximately 15 hours per term (including meetings and preparation). Meetings take place 6 times every school year. We really count on you to be there! If you miss three meetings in a row without a reason accepted by the Chair, you may be asked to step down. Governors serve a 4-year term, which you can choose to renew when it ends.

Uphold our values: You will help shape the school’s goals and champion the Beckmead Trust’s vision and values. You must follow our Code of Conduct, keep sensitive school discussions completely confidential, and always declare if you have a personal conflict of interest (such as a personal connection)

Contribute: Bring your unique professional or personal insights to the board.
