About The Organisation

Manchester Camerata is the UK’s most relentlessly pioneering orchestra, known for constantly innovating – redefining what an orchestra can be.

Whether performing with the Pet Shop Boys live on MTV to over 300 million people worldwide, or touring international concert halls with the greats of classical music, Manchester Camerata exists to transform lives through exceptional music.
Led by their Music Director, Gábor Takács-Nagy, and their artistic partners, they have hosted orchestral raves, brewed beers, released award-winning short films, made sportswear, and have attracted millions of streams worldwide. They are also proud to be Classic FM’s only partner in Greater Manchester.

Camerata believe in the transformative power of music – on or off the stage. This belief has led them to become leaders within music, health and wellbeing, hosting the UK’s first Centre of Excellence for Music and Dementia. Here they impact thousands with their award-winning Music in Mind programme, backed by over 12 years of research in partnership with The University of Manchester. Their vision for this work is to embed creative music-making within the dementia pathway.
Camerata are fierce champions for the future of their art form. Their ABO Award-winning Camerata 360° Ruth Sutton Fellowship programme is designed for musicians in the North, setting new standards by equipping them with skills in all the ways music can make an impact.

They achieve all of this from their home, The Monastery, Manchester, a stunning 19th-century monastery in Gorton, working closely with the local area, engaging with schools, youth zones and care homes to create social connections across the community.

At the heart of all their work is an orchestra of exceptional musicians. Led by Caroline Pether, their players are known for their incisive empathy, which they apply to every aspect of their work.

Position Description

Recruiting for the team is one of the most exciting things we get to do. We are a relentlessly pioneering organisation dedicated to the impact music can have on people’s lives. If you share the belief that music can change society for the better, we’d love to hear from you.

From performing with the Pet Shop Boys at the MTV EMAs and touring international concert halls to pioneering our award-winning Music in Mind programme for health and wellbeing, our purpose is to transform lives through the power of music. Our commitment to positive change drives us, and we work with the best creative talent to make it happen.

To ensure we continue to deliver on our mission, we are currently seeking new Trustees with expertise in:

Legal: Providing critical oversight and strategic guidance on governance and contracts.

Fundraising & Philanthropy: Securing the investment needed for our community and creative work.

The Commercial Music World: Providing experience from the commercial music sector to bring constructive challenge, strategic support, and valuable industry networks.

We value diverse thought, backgrounds, and experiences to enrich our Board.

Selection Criteria

Our Board of Trustees works to ensure the highest levels of governance, and bring a mix of skills, experience and perspectives.

It is this mix, rather than any one individual, which makes for strong governance, and enables the organisation to achieve its charitable purpose – making music for positive change.

To bring about the change we seek, we endeavour to create more equitable access across the full breadth and body of our work. Increasing the diversity of thought, backgrounds, ages and characteristics represented on our Board will help us do that, and to create impact in society.

Previous experience as a trustee is not essential; we are committed to providing full training and support to help you develop in this role.

In addition to their formal governance roles, and the key responsibilities for all Trustees, we’re looking for people with skills and experience in one or more of the following:

  • FUNDRAISING We are particularly interested in talking to someone who brings a network among potential philanthropic donors (possibly including corporates, foundations, and high net worth individuals), and who will actively use their networks to make introductions to build enthusiasm, which will sustain and grow our impact.
  • COMMERCIAL MUSIC WORLD We’re seeking an experienced professional from the commercial music sector who can bring constructive challenge, strategic support, and valuable industry networks to help the organisation grow and thrive.
  • LEGAL We are seeking someone with broad legal expertise. This does not need to be specifically in charity law, as we can draw on specialist external advice where required.

We are recruiting more than one trustee and so we hope to find a blend of backgrounds, skills, networks and experience which will enrich our Board.

Some of the attributes we are looking for include:

  • Skills as a communicator and ambassador.
  • The ability to think creatively, strategically and for the long-term.
  • The ability to work well in a Board group, finding the right mix of challenge and support so we get governance right and bring it to life.
  • Empathy and emotional intelligence, with a strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Sharing the values which make us who we are – humanity, originality, excellence, and fearlessness.
