About The Organisation

Independent Lives is a charity dedicated to supporting disabled people, people with health conditions, and carers to lead full, independent, and fulfilling lives. We provide a range of personalised support services that empower individuals to take control of their care, participate fully in their communities, and make informed choices about how they live.

Our work is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves dignity, autonomy, and equal opportunity. Through direct services, peer support, training, and advocacy, we help people build confidence, access the support they need, and overcome barriers to independence.

As an organisation, we are committed to inclusion, collaboration, and continuous improvement — working closely with the people we support to shape services that reflect their needs and aspirations.

Position Description

We are seeking a Chair to lead our Board as Independent Lives enters a period of growth, innovation and rising demand for our services. The Chair will guide the Board in providing effective oversight, ensuring clear strategic direction and supporting a strong, user‑led governance culture.

You will work closely with our CEO as a constructive partner, helping shape priorities, strengthen organisational resilience and ensure decisions align with our values. You will lead quarterly Board meetings, oversee good governance practice and help trustees contribute confidently to discussion, scrutiny and strategic planning.

Our Board is proudly user‑led, with 75% of trustees having direct lived experience of disability. As Chair, you will ensure these voices remain at the heart of decision‑making and that the Board operates collaboratively and inclusively.

You will support Independent Lives as we navigate challenges facing the social care sector, including workforce pressures, increased demand and the need for sustainable, person‑centred services. You may also be involved in trustee recruitment, succession planning and representing the organisation externally when appropriate.

This role offers the opportunity to lead a highly committed Board and make a meaningful difference at a pivotal moment for Independent Lives and the communities we support.

Selection Criteria

We are seeking a Chair who can confidently lead our Board and support Independent Lives through its next phase of development. You will bring proven experience of chairing a board, including leading constructive discussions, guiding decision‑making and ensuring strong governance. You will also be comfortable working strategically, setting direction and supporting organisational performance.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Is passionate about empowering disabled people to have choice, control and independence.
  • Values diversity and understands the importance of including people with lived experience at every level.
  • Thinks strategically and objectively, especially when scrutinising performance, risk and organisational priorities.
  • Works well as part of a team, enabling trustees to contribute thoughtfully and collaboratively.
  • Communicates confidently with a wide range of people, from our members to partners, funders and stakeholders.
  • Understands (or is committed to understanding) the social model of disability and its relevance to our work. [
  • Has a strong appreciation of charity governance, finance and legal responsibilities, or is willing to develop in these areas.

We are committed to maintaining a Board where 75% of trustees have lived experience of disability, either directly or through caring for a disabled person. Your personal experience of disability or caring is highly valued, but not essential. What matters most is your commitment to our values and to championing the voices of disabled people.

How to Apply

If you have the qualities listed above — whether or not you are disabled yourself — we would very much welcome your application. Your leadership can help strengthen our organisation and support our mission to ensure disabled people can live the lives they choose.
