About The Organisation

Alternative Futures Group (AFG) is one of the largest not for profit health and social care charities in the North West, supporting people with learning disabilities and mental health conditions to live independent, fulfilling lives.

With an annual turnover now exceeding £85 million and support for around 900 people, AFG operates at significant scale and complexity within a highly regulated environment.

We are proud of our strong reputation for person-centred care, innovation and outcomes, but we are equally ambitious about the future. Our Board is highly effective, dynamic and values-driven and we are committed to ensuring it continues to evolve, bringing the right technical expertise, diversity and constructive challenge to support the organisation’s next phase.

Position Description

We are seeking individuals with a fundamental alignment with our charitable purpose and mission. Trustees who are motivated to actively contribute rather than simply observe, ensuring the Board remains dynamic and impactful. With exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, you will bring sound judgement, independent thinking, the ability to think strategically and the confidence to challenge constructively.

You will be comfortable operating at board level within a highly regulated, complex environment, will understand the intersection of care, risk, compliance and governance and demonstrate strong empathy and emotional intelligence

Selection Criteria

We are keen to hear from candidates with a background in:

  • Clinical/Quality and Safety

For this appointment, we are seeking a senior clinical leader with experience across regulated services, NHS or social care environments. You will bring a strong understanding of clinical governance, safety and operational delivery, an insight into where care, risk and compliance intersect and an ability to support and challenge on quality, outcomes and regulatory assurance.

  • People/HR

We are seeking a senior HR/people leader with experience within complex organisations of a similar scale. With strong emotional intelligence and a proven ability to navigate sensitive organisational dynamics and workforce challenges, you will have experience across culture, workforce strategy, EDI and organisational development. In addition, you will have the confidence to provide constructive challenge and support to the executive team.

  • Finance (Qualified Accountant)

We are looking for a fully qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent) with substantial financial leadership experience in an organisation of scale and complexity; ideally within regulated or multi-site environments. You will evidence an ability to strengthen financial oversight, governance and decision-making and have a strong understanding of risk, audit, internal controls and financial sustainability
